Moving crypto into self-custody means taking on a job an exchange used to do for you: guarding the key. A recovery seed phrase is that key expressed as a list of ordinary words, and it is worth understanding exactly what it does.
What the seed phrase controls
The phrase is not a password to an account on a server. It is the input from which your wallet derives every private key it holds. Anyone with the phrase can recreate the wallet on any device, and no one without it can recover the funds.
Practical rules
- Write it down offline. A photo or a note in cloud storage is reachable by anyone who reaches that account.
- Store at least one backup in a separate physical location.
- Never enter the phrase into a website or a support chat. Legitimate services never ask for it.
Common misunderstandings
- Resetting a wallet app does not change the phrase; the same words restore the same funds.
- A hardware wallet protects the phrase from a compromised computer, but the written backup still matters if the device is lost.
